Birken Lofts
401 W. Ontario Street in Chicago’s River North neighborhood. Adaptive reuse transforming a historic loft building into 57 modern residences.
The Project
Located in Chicago’s River North neighborhood, Birken Lofts is an adaptive reuse project converting the historic S. Birkenstein & Sons Company headquarters into a 57-unit residential community. Originally built in 1905, the heavy timber loft building preserves its red brick façade, arched windows, and exposed timber structure while being reimagined for modern living.
The redevelopment will introduce studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom residences ranging from 564 to 819 square feet, while maintaining key historic elements including original masonry walls, exposed timber beams, and arched window openings.
Residents will enjoy updated interiors and amenities including new kitchens, in-unit laundry, modern HVAC, gigabit internet, a fitness center, co-working space, resident lounge, TV lounge, and bicycle storage.
